JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB SUMMARY:
Administers planned, quality nursing care in the OT in a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and personnel.
RESPONSIBILITIES
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operating room attire:
- Dons and adheres to operating room attire according to policy and procedure. (3.1)
- Room preparation and equipment assembly:
- Prepares room and assembles instruments and equipment based on patient’s surgical needs. (3.2)
- Aseptic technique and patient identification:
- Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique. (3.3)
- Correctly identifies patient and surgical site. (3.4)
- Pre-operative checklist and vital signs monitoring:
- Checks thoroughly the pre-operative checklist of patient; including completion of required diagnostic and laboratory procedures. (3.5)
- Monitors patients’ vital signs in the pre-operative area and post-operative recovery room. (3.6)
- Patient positioning and exposure:
- Positions patient with the use of positional aids, maintaining circulatory, respiratory, neuromuscular homeostasis while maintaining privacy and providing maximum exposure to the operative procedure. (3.7)
- Scrub nurse and circulating nurse duties:
- Demonstrates skill in performing the duties of scrub nurse and circulating nurse. (3.8)
- Safety protocols:
- Provides safety to patient, to self and the whole surgical team by adopting safety protocols like ‘Time Out’. (3.9)
- Surgical counts:
- Counts surgical items audibly, and views items concurrently with another individual when counting, and recognizes that one of the individuals performing the count should be the RN circulator. (3.10)
- Recognizes that, when possible, surgical counts during a procedure should be performed by the same two individuals. (3.11)
- Verifies correct recording of the surgical counts of soft goods, sharps, miscellaneous items, and items placed in the wound in a location that is visible to the surgical team (e.g., the white count board). (3.12)
- Infection prevention practices:
- Implements correct practices for the prevention of infection, practicing strict aseptic technique and maintenance of sterile field. (3.13)
- Surgeon and anesthetist assistance:
- Assist the surgeon and anesthetist during the operation and ensure appropriate handling of the specimen obtained during surgery. (3.14)
- Postoperative activities:
- Organize patient transportation from the OT to the recovery room and carry-out and/or supervise all the postoperative activities to prepare the OT for the next scheduled operation or emergency. (3.15)
- Hygiene, sterilization, asepsis and disinfection protocols:
- Implement the hygiene, sterilization, asepsis and disinfection protocols and procedures at all times, before, during and after operations, to ensure the safety conditions of patients and staff. (3.16)
- Specialized equipment care and maintenance:
- Participate in care and maintenance of endoscopes, electrosurgical unit, microscopes, drill systems, phacco machine, endoscopes and other specialized equipment, ensuring an agreed standard of decontamination at all times including accurate records of traceability of all equipment. (3.17)
- Surgical instruments cleaning and disinfection:
- Accurately maintain count of all surgical instruments, swabs and needles used during the surgery and ensure that the surgical instruments are send to CSSD for cleaning and disinfection as per the policy of the hospital. (3.18)
- Surgical hand wash and infection control practices:
- Demonstrate skill in surgical hand wash and appropriate knowledge of the infection control practices pertaining to operating theatre. (3.19)
- Post anesthesia monitoring:
- Competent in monitoring of patients post anesthesia. (3.20)
- Ensure that patients recovering from anesthesia receive optimum care and is able to demonstrate complete knowledge in the usage of Aldrete scoring. (3.21)
- Patient records confidentiality:
- Maintains confidentiality of patient’s records and updates all relevant patient documentation / medical records as per hospital policy and procedure. (3.22)
- Cardio – Pulmonary Resuscitation technique:
- Demonstrates competence in Cardio – Pulmonary Resuscitation technique. (3.23)
- Waste segregation and disposal:
- Strictly adheres to the waste segregation and disposal as per hospital policy. (3.24)
- Crash carts and emergency equipment checking:
- Responsible for checking of crash carts and emergency equipment’s as per hospital policy. (3.25)
- Medications storage and inventory:
- Responsible for appropriate storage and maintaining inventory of medications including high alert medications and narcotics as per hospital policy.(3.26)
- Hazmat items storage and inventory:
- Responsible for appropriate storage and maintaining inventory of Hazmat items including the MSDS as per hospital policy. (3.27)
- Reporting mechanisms and chain of command:
- Follows the reporting mechanisms /chain of command in the Nursing Department. Issues are correctly and quickly reported. These include all patient care issues. (3.28)
- Equipment and supplies utilization and inventory:
- Demonstrates an economical approach to the utilization of equipment’s and supplies while assisting the charge nurse to maintain an appropriate ward stock. (3.29)
- Responsibility and accountability:
- Takes responsibility and accountability for own actions and decisions, as well as for the related results. (3.30)
QUALIFICATIONS
4. QUALIFICATION, LICENSURE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SPECIAL SKILLS:
4.1 Bachelor of Science in Nursing/Diploma in Nursing.
4.2 Current license in country of origin and with HAAD license to practice in Abu Dhabi, UAE
4.3 Minimum 2 years nursing experience after qualification.
4.4 BLS and ACLS provider
4.5 Good English spoken & written; Arabic language advantageous/desirable but not essential.
