JOB DESCRIPTION
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical activities:
- Provides direct care and related duties in the critical care. Maintains current knowledge of critical care nursing practice and standards.
- Plans, implements and evaluates nursing care given to assigned neonate in an effective and organized manner.
- Responsible for assessment and reassessment of patients.
- Perform the Appropriateness review of medications before preparing and administering medications as required.
- Responsible for continuous care for infant in receiving articles like warmer, suction, oxygen & AMBU bag, ET tubes etc. ready.
- Responsible for receiving the infant from the labor room/ operating room when required.
- Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of newborn safety, newborn identification policy, hypoglycemic protocol, visitation policy, immunization schedule and breast feeding.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to care for neonates born at risk.
- Demonstrates complete skill in performing immediate new born care procedures like insertion of nasogastric / orogastric tube, gastric lavage, aspiration, administration of Inj. Vitamin K, IV cannulation and check for anal patency.
- Performs new born assessment including anthropometric measurements.
- Performs aseptic venipuncture, initiates IV, and cares for infant with peripheral, umbilical central IV.
- Demonstrates sufficient knowledge and skill in assessing and caring for new born with congenital abnormalities.
- Responsible for initial assessment and stabilization of the new born in the neonatal intensive care unit, placing the infant on continuous hemodynamic monitoring, maintaining thermoregulation, performing capillary glucose monitoring, and carrying out Doctors orders within her scope of practice.
- Demonstrates in-depth knowledge in the care of infant under phototherapy.
- Assists with umbilical catherization and collection of specimens, bloods for diagnostic testing
- Assesses and documents vital signs at specified frequency as per hospital policy.
- Ability to set up peripheral cannulation, CPAP, hood oxygen & nasal prong.
- Assists with intubations by preparing for the procedure.
- Performs or assists with feedings and encourages breast feeding.
- Performs baby bath, cord care and eye care meticulously for the infants.
- Performs new born screening test including audiometry.
- Prepares, administers and documents all neonatal medication as per hospital policies
- Provides for the physical, psychological and social needs of the patient and families.
- Predominant role in preparation, administration and documentation of medication.
- Performs a wide range of nursing procedures with attention to accuracy, patient safety and comfort, including those requiring strict aseptic technique.
- Assists with transfer of new born / infant within the health care facilities and serves as transport nurse for new born / infant during ambulance transport.
- Provides health education to the infants’ parents about care of infant at home including breast feeding and immunization.
- Competent in neonatal resuscitation and performs when needed.
- Responsible for completing all the details on the birth notification form, labor and delivery register.
Administrative activities:
- Maintains and updates all relevant patient documentation / medical records as per hospital policy and procedure.
- Follows the reporting mechanisms / chain of command in the Nursing services department ensuring all patient care issues are accurately and promptly reported.
- Demonstrates an economical approach to the utilization of equipment and supplies while assisting the head nurse to maintain an appropriate ward stock.
- Takes responsibility for the unit in the absence of the Charge Nurse as assigned by the Nursing Coordinator.
- Responsible for checking crash cart as per the checklist.
- Participates in Quality improvement projects and KPI’s.
- Responsible for appropriate storage and appropriate storage and maintaining inventory checklist of medications which includes high alert medications and narcotics as per hospital policy.
- Takes the initiative to provide regular updates to the mother or as requested.
- Responsible for maintaining inventory checklist of Hazmat items through the use of Material Safety Data Sheet as per hospital policy.
- Takes the initiative to provide regular updates to the mother or as requested.
- Completes annual nursing competencies as per hospital policy.
- Ensures preventative and ongoing maintenance of equipment is carried out, reporting all failures or deficiencies to the appropriate department head.
- Demonstrates strict adherence to all hospital policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of and participates in fire safety, patient safety, infection control and the other necessary precautionary measures as per hospital policy.
- Takes responsibility for professional clinical practice and is actively involved in updating and continuing education.
- Ability to rise to challenges and stay calm under pressure.
- Assists and encourages kangaroo care/developmental care where needed.
- Fosters and facilitates peer teaching activities in a clinical setting.

- Participates in/initiates quality Improvements within the Department to continuously improve education or services

QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing/Diploma in Nursing.
- Current license in country of origin and with HAAD or DHA license to practice in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
- Minimum 2 years nursing experience in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
- Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certificate.
- Good English spoken & written, Arabic language advantageous/desirable but not essential.
- Ability to review procedures and implement new models of service delivery to satisfy client and organizational requirements.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality outcomes and ability to consult with staff regarding continuous improvement.
- Excellent command of oral and written English. Arabic language advantageous/desirable but not essential.
- Possess a “can do” and flexible approach.
