JOB DESCRIPTION
Clinical activities:
- Directs and supervises all administrative and clinical activities of her designated area.
- Responsible for assessment and reassessment of patients.
- Ensures implementation and evaluation of high quality patient care standards.
- Ensures nursing staff perform the Appropriateness review of medications before preparing and administering medications.
- Supervises the perioperative care of patient to ensure optimum quality of care to all surgical patients is provided.
- Ensures strict adherence to the time out policy within the operating theatre complex.
- Responsible for ensuring that optimum and continuous care is delivered to the patient in the recovery room.
- Oversees the running of Pre Anesthesia Clinic in the OT Complex
- Responsible for maintaining cleanliness of the department in accordance with the infection control and waste management policy of the hospital.
Administrative activities:
- Participates in the development and implementation of unit goals, Quality Improvement Projects, objectives, protocols, standards, policies and procedures that are consistent with those of the nursing service and the hospital.
- Directly supervises and evaluates performance of all categories of nursing staff assigned to the operating theatre, providing counseling and disciplinary measures documenting and reporting to the Nursing Supervisor and Nursing Administrator where applicable.
- Provides and ensures orientation to newly joined theater staff and conducts assessment as per the Performance Appraisal Policy.
- Coordinates with the Nursing Supervisor and Nursing Administrator in conducting annual competency and skill based competency checks for all categories assigned to the operating theater.
- Coordinates with the Nursing Department to develop, organize and direct competency based orientation/ training programs and is responsible for its documentation and evaluation.
- Prepares daily / monthly staff allocation of her designated area and ensures competency based nurse/patient allocation is followed at all times.
- Collaborates with the Nursing Supervisor to design, implement and evaluates the effectiveness of staff education based on; staff satisfaction, staff development and staff competencies.
- Coordinates with other health team members for maximum utilization of the operating theatre suites.
- Ensures preventative and ongoing maintenance of equipment are carried out, reporting all failures or deficiencies to the appropriate department head.
- Ensures crash carts and emergency equipment are checked on a daily basis and documented according to the hospital policy.
- Responsible for storing and maintaining medication inventories which include high alert medications and narcotics as per hospital policy.
- Ensures inventory control system of Hazmat items are maintained through the use of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) as per hospital policy.
- Coordinates with the Nursing Supervisor and Nursing Administrator to develop appropriate inventory systems, which are ongoing, in order to prevent shortages or overstocking within the unit.
- Coordinates with Nursing Supervisor and Nursing Administrator to obtain emergency medications, equipment and supplies, ensuring records are up to date and inventories are protected.
- Responsible for the storage and maintenance of sterile supplies, consumable inventory and linen.
- Participates as a member of the code blue and code black team as required
- Strictly adheres to the waste segregation and disposal policy.
- Adheres to disposal of human tissue.
- Ensures all staff adheres to the Infection Control Policy.
- Responsible for monthly statistics as per the quality indicator of JCI.
- Demonstrates in-depth knowledge and participates in fire safety, patient safety, infection control and the other necessary precautions as per hospital policy.
- Assists in the development of unit Policies and Procedures.
- Demonstrates strict adherence to all hospital policies and procedures.
- Fosters and facilitates peer teaching activities in a clinical setting.
- Demonstrates ability to perform under pressure.
- Demonstrates ability to inspire team spirit.
- Ensures proper and meticulous documentation/record keeping.
OSHMS activities:
- Integrate appropriate OSH management into processes and culture. Ensure that staff has the knowledge to meet their responsibilities and that OSH risks are identified and controlled.
- OSH roles and responsibilities include:
- Provide OSH information, training and supervision;
- Assist with the preparation of risk assessments;
- Ensure application of appropriate risk control measures; and
- Reporting of OSH hazards and incidents.
- Comply with reasonable OSH instructions, policies and safe working procedures
- Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.
- Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures
- Not willfully or recklessly endanger anyone’s health and safety
- Assist with the preparation of risk assessments
- Report OSH Hazards, incidents, Near misses and issues
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycling of waste as much as possible
- Attend all OSH Trainings, awareness programs and mock drills.
- Participates in the OSHMS audits, inspections, ensuring standards are maintained.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing / Diploma in Nursing.
- Current license in country of origin and with HAAD or DHA license to practice in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the Operation Theater (OT) with at least 2 years’ experience as Charge Nurse or equivalent grade in relevant clinical area
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate
- Ability to work flexible shifts.
- Demonstrates sound decision-making, leadership and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to review procedures and implement new models of service delivery to satisfy client and organizational requirements.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality outcomes and ability to consult with staff regarding continuous improvement.
- Excellent command of oral and written English. Arabic language advantageous/desirable but not essential.
- Possess a “can do” and flexible approach.
- Ability to demonstrate highly developed communication and organizational skills at all levels.
- Ability to provide compassionate care that is respectful to patients’ cultural preferences while keeping in line with regulating bodies (HAAD, JCI).
- Knowledge of computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision and in a team within a complex clinical setting.
- Demonstrates knowledge and practice of confidentiality policy.
- Ability to demonstrate self-directed thinking, continued proficiency and initiative in problem solving when providing patient care in the clinical setting.
- May need to work flexible time to ensure unit coverage
