Job description
JOB SUMMARY:
The PICU staff nurse applies critical thinking skill through management and delivery of health care to critically ill pediatric patients experiencing life threatening problems requiring complex assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, high intensity therapies and interventions, based on established standards of healthcare and expectations
Job Responsibilities:
- Conducts an individualized patient assessment, prioritizing the data collection based on the infant or child’s immediate condition or needs
- Demonstrates the ability to provide and carries out established nursing procedures, utilizing the nursing process, and assuring the maintenance of a safe, clean environment for critically ill pediatric patients
- Provides complete and age appropriate total patient healthcare demonstrating the ability to assess critically ill pediatric patients, situation needs and problems
- Administers medications prescribed as well as other forms of treatment ordered by the doctor, following the seven (10) Rights of Medication Administration to minimize the possibility of error and clarifies individual accountability
- Administers blood and blood products as ordered by the physician, after double-checking and cross matching. Checks and verifies Blood/Blood Products Transfusion Consent Form. Maintains aseptic technique and monitors patient’s vital signs and conditions during blood transfusion, for early recognition and management of adverse reactions
- Formulates an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by infant / child response to care through assessment and reassessment to update the plan of care
- Maintains functional areas, such as nutrition, mobility, cognition, falls prevention, pain management and continence as integral to the management of skin integrity
- Provides effective, efficient and productive total patient care including assessment, planning, intervention, teaching, rehabilitation, weight-based medication calculation and administration, treatments, discharge planning and evaluation
- Participates with the physician in daily rounds, treatments and procedures with current reports, and then carries out the orders with proper documentation, to maintain effective and uniform care for the patient
- Follows and monitors infection control precautions to meet requirements of healthcare standards
- Collects specimens as requested by the medical team, using proper method of specimen collection, for laboratory investigations and diagnostic purposes, to aid in providing an accurate test result. Follows-up results and refer as necessary
- Demonstrates competence, knowledge and assessment skills by maintaining accurate clinical observations during urgent or critical situations such as respiratory or cardiac arrest, following the procedural guidelines on Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation in order to save patient’s life
- Acts as a preceptor and a professional role model to new employees, trainees and other members of the health care team. Monitors the performance of junior colleagues and reports to the Head Nurse or Charge Nurse, for evaluation
- Assists in the coordination of healthcare services with medical staff, nursing staff, other departments as well as other health care professionals. Responds rapidly and effectively during emergency situations
- Demonstrates effective communication skills and shows respect, compassion and cultural sensitivity to patient/family, to gain similar respect and cooperation in improving the patient’s health
- Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to patient and family’s diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity and rights
- Demonstrate self-motivation and ability to make decisions independently keeping charge nurse and appropriate other healthcare professionals informed and supporting the hospital’s philosophy and decisions
- Participates in unit activities such as project and workshops
- Adheres to the dress code policy, appears neat and clean
- Ability to adopt in performing under stress when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual, or dangerous circumstances; or situations in which working speed and continuous attention are make-or-break aspects of the job
- Proper handling and operation of PICU equipment including cleaning, disinfection, maintenance and storage according to KSMC regulations and policies
- Plans the care to be provided by making use of available resources. Implements and evaluates care given in order to make necessary plan or action if desired outcome is not met
- Communicates professionally with healthcare team members in all activities designed for the improvement of patient outcomes and to meet patient care needs. Maintains good working relationship with colleagues by following the professional code of ethics, to gain respect, loyalty and trust
- Adheres to the PICU and hospital policies and procedures in order to provide unified care to the patients.
- Assumes responsibility and maintains work confidentiality within the nursing department
- Addresses issues using a problem solving frame work. Initiates the nursing or medical chain of command to resolve issues satisfactorily
- Provides correct and appropriate information and education to patient/family regarding their rights, treatment and services rendered, and ensures that the Patients and Family Rights and responsibilities are being followed and implemented, to assist the patient/family in making decision and to encourage them to take an active role in assuring and improving their welfare
- Follows any other task/assignment given by the senior staff within the scope of service
- Educates patient’s family about specific instructions to be followed according to the patient’s needs, assuring full orientation of disease, surgery and intervention to maximize patient’s response to care
- Meets all general and specific unit competencies
- Attend unit related equipment training and competent to handle equipment used in PICU (CRRT, PD, Plasmapheresis)
- Performs other duties /assignments related to the unit scope of service

Qualification And Experience
Required Qualification : Bachelor science in Nursing
Required License / Certificates: Registered with Saudi commission for health specialties \ Certified BLS Provider, PALS
