Job Summary:

The Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Nurse provides specialized perioperative and post-operative nursing care to infants, children, and adolescents undergoing complex cardiac surgeries. This role requires a deep understanding of congenital heart defects, critical care protocols, and child-specific psychosocial needs. The nurse collaborates closely with cardiothoracic surgeons, pediatric intensivists, anesthesiologists, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver expert nursing care before, during, and after pediatric cardiac surgeries.
  • Monitor and manage critically ill pediatric cardiac patients in the ICU and step-down units.
  • Prepare patients and families for surgical interventions, offering education and emotional support.
  • Administer and titrate vasoactive drugs, analgesics, and sedatives as ordered.
  • Assist in the use of advanced life support equipment including ECMO, ventilators, and cardiac monitors.
  • Collaborate in developing and updating individualized care plans.
  • Act as a liaison between the surgical team and families, providing timely updates.
  • Ensure accurate and thorough documentation in accordance with hospital and legal standards.
  • Maintain infection control and safety protocols in all clinical areas.
  • Participate in pediatric cardiac surgery rounds, case reviews, and morbidity and mortality conferences.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and certification updates.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required. Master’s preferred.
  • Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license [specify region/country, e.g., Saudi Commission for Health Specialties or US RN].
  • Certifications: BLS, PALS, ACLS required. CCRN or CNOR preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years in pediatric cardiac ICU or operating room setting.
  • Strong knowledge of congenital cardiac conditions and pediatric critical care protocols.
