Job description

JOB SUMMARY  :  

Provides safe and total quality care to patients from newborn to 28 days with intensive care needs. The NICU staff nurse applies critical thinking skills through management and delivery of healthcare to critically ill neonates by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation based on established standards of healthcare and expectations of KSMC

Job Responsibilitie: 

  1. Receives endorsement from the outgoing shift with patient, medical record and proper assessment, to identify correctly and to know the present care and needs of the patient
  2. Assesses and evaluates patient’s condition such as taking of vital signs including pain, level of consciousness and other parameters by utilizing the nursing forms to recognize and implement effective management and prompt intervention
  3. Documents all assessments, interventions and reassessments in the patient’s medical record, in a timely and chronological manner, to serve as a written communication to all healthcare team members and promotes continuity of care
  4. Maintains patient’s personal hygiene including baby bath and incubator cleaning by adhering to the standard precautions for infection prevention
  5. Participates with the physician in daily rounds, with current reports, and then carries out the orders with proper documentation, to maintain effective and uniform care for the patient
  6. Assists the physician of all invasive procedure like umbilical catheterization, intubation, ICT insertion, lumber puncture, PICC insertion, and blood exchange transfusion etc
  7. Attends high risk deliveries in labor room and Cesarean Section in OR according to the departmental policy
  8. Receives and manages effectively all admissions from other units like labor room, operating room and emergency department
  9. Administers medications prescribed as well as other forms of treatment ordered by the doctor, following the Ten (10) Rights of Medication Administration to minimize the possibility of error and clarifies individual accountability
  10. Administers blood and blood products as ordered by the physician, after double-checking and cross matching. Checks and verifies Blood/Blood Products Transfusion Consent Form. Maintains aseptic technique and monitors patient’s vital signs and conditions during blood transfusion, for early recognition and management of adverse reactions
  11. Administers intravenous fluids, oral feeding, Naso-Gastric Tube feeding, Enteral feeding and Total Parenteral Nutrition, to maintain normal nutritional status of the patient
  12. Ensures proper labeling and storage of the EBM (express breast milk) as per the policy
  13. Escorts the patient to other department for special procedures especially radiological and surgical procedures, to ensure safety and to monitor patient’s condition during and after the procedure especially those who have given sedation or contrast
  14. Collects specimens as requested by the medical team, using proper method of specimen collection, for laboratory investigations and diagnostic purposes, to aid in providing an accurate test result. Follows-up results and refer as necessary
  15. Checks and verifies consent for medical, surgical and/or high risk procedures following the guidelines on how to obtain an informed consent, to release the hospital and medical staff from all responsibilities or consequences that may occur
  16. Formulates plan of care based on patients’ needs and evaluates within set target in order to ensure that desired outcome is met
  17. Demonstrates competence, knowledge and assessment skills by maintaining accurate clinical observations during urgent or critical situations following the procedural guidelines on Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation in order to save patient’s life
  18. Prepares patients for discharge including taking of follow-up appointment in Out Patient Department, giving instructions to patient’s family regarding home medications and emphasizing the importance of bringing patient for follow-up/treatment, to ensure continuity of care and good compliance
  19. Communicates professionally with healthcare team members in all activities designed for the improvement of patient outcomes and to meet patient care needs. Maintains good working relationship with colleagues by following the professional code of ethics, to gain respect, loyalty and trust
  20. Acts as a preceptor and a professional role model to new employees at NICU. Monitors the performance of junior colleagues and reports to the Head Nurse or Charge Nurse, for evaluation
  21. Maintains personal hygiene by adhering to the standard precautions and infection prevention and control policies
  22. Adheres to the dress code policy, appears neat and clean
  23. Adheres to the departmental and administrative policies and procedures
  24. Addresses issues using a problem solving frame work. Initiates the nursing or medical chain of command to resolve issues satisfactorily
  25. Participates actively in performance improvement activities within the department
  26. Provides instruction and teachings to patient/family in a language or manner they can understand, to meet patient’s ongoing healthcare needs and to maintain continuity of care
  27. Uses research/current reference in the provision of evidence- based care
  28. Adheres to the NICU and hospital policies and procedures in order to provide unified care to the patients
  29. Assumes responsibility and maintains work confidentiality within the Nursing Department
  30. Meets all general and specific unit competencies
  31. Performs other duties /assignments related to the unit scope of service

Job Requirements

Qualification And Experience: 

Required Qualification : Bachelor science in Nursing

Required License / Certificates : Registered with Saudi commission for health specialties \ Certified BLS Provider
