  • Coordinates the provision of safe, efficient, and economical 24 hour nursing care in line with established standards of care in all critical care units.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and clinical skills. Able to supervise, demonstrate, assist and teach staff in improving, maintaining and obtaining new Critical Care skills.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to render and supervise care services based on age appropriateness and developmental need of patients.
  • Provides ensures and supports direct culturally acceptable care for patients and families.
  • Collaborates with patients, families, and health care professionals to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Assists and develops formation of measurable goals for the unit.
  • Creates and supports an environment which fosters teamwork, cooperation, and respect for cultural diversity.
  • Assists the Manager in all scheduling, policy writing and other projects as defined.
  • Assists with all writing of annual / probationary evaluations
  • Monitors attendance of staff to annual mandatory in-services
  • Assists manager with completion of departmental and unit specific competencies
  • Assures 100% of new staff completes a planned departmental orientation within 120 days.
  • Promotes development and use of care planning and/or other means of planning care.
  • Maintains accountability for budgeting/financial management and optimal use of resources in unit.
  • Supports, enforces, and interprets institutional and departmental policies and procedures to staff
  • Performs additional duties as required as needed and requested (nursing supervisor, community promotions), etc.
  • Promotes professional and clinical growth of self and staff.
  • Participates hospital-wide and nursing committees.
  • Integrates evidence based research/practice into clinical and management process in unit, as indicated.
  • Promotes physician satisfaction with nursing services provided.
  • Assists with and promote budgetary management.
  • Maintains education records for staff.
  • Monitor unit stock, inventory and lost charges count as well as store organization.
  • Appropriate use of the sick leave system.
  • Participate in monthly environmental rounds.
  • Responsible for obtaining the required CPD points (15) every year for re-licensure.
  • Ensures daily unit responsibilities (checking crash cart, refrigeration temperature check-list, etc) are assigned.
  • Oversees the orientation of new staff members.
  • Ensures supplies from CSSD and Pharmacy are ordered to keep unit stocked at prescribed levels and ensure that there are no expiry date items available in the unit.
  • Oversees that staff members (RNs, HCAs, UCIs) are working within their specific role and job description.
  • Demonstrates skills in continual assessment of patient, family’s physical and psychological needs and ability to document in line with hospital standards.
  • Demonstrates skill in co-ordination and planning of care, and prioritizing care, based on individual needs.  Revises care plan response to patient needs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to render care and services based on specific unit specialities, age appropriateness and the developmental needs of the patient
  • Performs nursing interventions/procedures in accordance with established standards of care and policy and procedures.
  • Assists medical colleagues with diagnostic therapeutic interventions.
  • Maintains accurate and thorough documentation following established JCIA standards.
  • Follow up clinical and PI indicators and report to Head Nurse.
  • Shares knowledge and skills with colleagues and others.
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Understands the responsibilities of safe handling, and administration of Narcotic/Controlled Drugs and documentation as directed by policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates knowledge and clinical expertise of Infection Control issues, reports and documents as directed in the Infection Control policies and procedures.
  • Directs and supervises the nursing care on assigned shift using the Nursing Process and Hospital Policies & Procedures.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for maintaining patient medications and refunding to the pharmacy any discontinued medications
  • Oversees floor stock medications
  • Responsible for narcotic hand over to next shift and replacing the needed items.
  • Communicate with narcotic supervisor pharmacist, reporting any incident or loss to the ICU manager.
  • Responsible for documentation in the narcotic book.
  • Work is performed on any shift, as required,
  • Has a sense of belonging to the unit, is cooperative with fellow staff members, and ready to help out and work overtime when needed
  • Work is performed on any shift as required
  • Ensures a complete and accurate handover has been given to the next shift
  • Oversees that staff members (RNs, HCAs, UCIs) are working within their specific role and job description
  • Monitoring ANTT practice on the unit.
  • Monitor link nurses performance (infection control, pain management and clinical education.
  • Actively participate on the unit auditing as per Manager instructions
  • Takes active lead in creating and working on unit-based PI activities (data collection, PI teams, etc.).
  • Serves on hospital wide PI teams/committees/task forces as required.
  • Actively participates in PI Plan by using incident reporting, customer complaint reporting and medication error reporting.
  • Assesses education needs and provides effective and age appropriate education to patients/families.
  • Advocates the Patient’s Bill of Rights.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of professional standards – keeps up to date with professional literature and changes in standards.
  • Maintains patient, doctor and staff confidentiality in all areas of the hospital.
  • Develops personal goals and objectives.
  • Attends at least 8 of the 12 monthly Unit meetings and reads and signs for the other 4 meetings missed in a timely manner.
  • To ensure the delivery of high quality care to assigned patients in efficient manner.
  • Follow up clinical and PI indicators and report to Manager.
  • Assists other staff members in improving their assessment skills, giving input when need is identified.
  • Acts as resource to other staff members during the evaluation of complex patient care.
  • Participates in the development of patient and family education teaching tools.


  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing (duration not less than three years) or
  • Diploma in Nursing (not less than three academic years in nursing only) or
  • Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery (not less than three academic years)
  • Post Graduate Degree in Nursing Management / Advanced Clinical Speciality desirable


  • Post Graduate Diploma / Certification in Critical care desirable
  • Current nursing license.
  • At least 5 years Critical Care experience required
  • Previous clinical leadership role an advantage
