Job summary

Were looking for an enthusiastic and experienced childrens nurse to join our team as a band 6 Childrens Diabetes Nurse Specialist. As a specialist diabetes nurse you will be an active member of the childrens diabetes MDT working to deliver, develop, evaluate and audit the service in line with Best Practice Tariff. We are offering this rewarding position to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of children and young people aged 0 -19 years in our area with diabetes.We have a friendly and dynamic team, consisting of a band 7 lead nurse post, band 6 nurse specialists, a Health Care Assistant and administrative staff. We work as part of a wider MDT, including Dieticians, Psychologists and Consultants with a special interest in Diabetes

Main duties of the job

This post is full time, based at Darlington Memorial Hospital, with a requirement to travel throughout the region, both to hospital sites, community settings including patients homes.

This role will utilise specialist clinical skills to provide assessment, advice, care and education to children and young people with Diabetes and their families, empowering them to self-manage this lifelong condition. You will hold an individual caseload, and undertake nurse led clinics, working as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure a holistic approach to Diabetes.

This role will require you to work independently in schools and colleges to train staff in the care of the child or young person with diabetes, as well as supporting the inpatient teams in developing skills in the care of children with Diabetes.

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients’ homes.

Person Specification



  • Professional knowledge acquired through degree or equivalent level of demonstrable professional knowledge/experience.
  • Supplemented by diploma level specialist training, experience, short courses.
  • ENB 998 or equivalent.
  • understanding of managing children and young people with diabetes and associated conditions.
  • Willingness to undertake a diabetes module at Masters level.


  • Specialist qualification/study in management of diabetes.
  • Non medical prescribing qualification.
  • Clinical skills qualification.



  • Significant post registration experience.
  • Understanding of caseload management.


  • Previous experience of delivering direct care to own caseload .
  • Experience of delivering patient education.
  • Experience of working with adolescents/young adults.
  • Awareness of the national transition agenda.
